WiCS Hacks

WiCS Hacks at UVA is a hackathon organized by UVA's Women in Computing Sciences (WiCS) organization. It is a 2-Day hackathon for people of all backgrounds, especially first-time hackers and those underrepresented in computer science.

Participants can work in teams of up to four to create innovative projects and win prizes for their submissions. There will be workshops, speakers, and mini activities throughout the day about music, culture, and innovation.

WiCS is a chapter of ACM-W, a committee that provides opportunities like scholarships to research, conferences, etc. We follow the ACM-W guidelines and add our own twist.

We are a club that supports, celebrates, and encourages the growing community of women in computing. We aim to raise awareness of issues faced by women in technology, in addition to inspiring women to explore educational and professional opportunities in the field through mentorship and service.

FAQ

A hackathon is an event where people work in teams to solve problems or build projects, usually using technology. The event often includes different prize tracks that focus on specific themes or challenges. At the end, teams present their projects, and winners are selected based on set criteria.

All high school, undergraduate, and graduate students aged 18 and over are welcome to participate in the Hackathon! Students from a wide range of disciplines, from Business to STEM, are encouraged to join. Anyone interested in technology and coding can participate, and we especially welcome first-time hackers and underrepresented groups in tech.

No prior programming experience is required. Hack to the Beat is a beginner-friendly hackathon!

No, you don’t have to! However, if you’re looking to form a team of up to four people, there will be Discord channels and a Day 1 workshop to help with team formation.
